Final Thriller Planning

After being put into groups and having a go at making a practice thriller where two people have a conversation sitting opposite each other and getting the chance to edit the clips using final cut pro we were told to start planning and scheduling our thrillers. we started with a group discussion between myself (Imran), Kaher & Kashmir where we spoke about several different ideas to base our film on. some of the themes/styles we chose were a Mystery, Murder, Forest, Night, Haunted. in the end after brainstorming ideas and linking together key themes and choices we decided to make a reconstruction style film. where a person is being followed and then killed later on by an unknown charecter however the atmosphere of the film makes you feel as though you are watching something that has happend in the past and not in the sense that it is taking place in the present.

Abu Kaher, Preliminary film

I feel the second film went well, however there were areas where we could have improved. In terms of the filming, we had a good time filming and creating the thriller.

I think that from the second film I understood that voices and acting (obviously) play an important part in the overall outcome of the thriller. The difference from our first and second thriller was that we included voices and brighter shots.

I think we challenged the stereotypical view of a thriller in some aspects, by using a lot more light and public spaces. In usual thriller, the light is quite niche and it tends to be a bit darker, however we use a lot more brighter lights. In respect to that, we did use camera shots such as low-angle shots and match cuts to create a thriller sense.

Practice filming session: A thrilling read

What have you learned from the filming session?

To start off, the task we had to do was; create a thrilling atmosphere whilst a character is reading a newspaper.

I am very pleased with how the outcome of the thriller, because I feel we took a range of good camera shots which changed the perspective of the audience, in terms of what the audience saw.
I think the low-angle shots were the most successful as in caught a glimpse of the area, character reading the newspaper and a shot of the killer. The fact that the audience does not see the killers face is important, as it grew tension as the video went along. However, I feel that the constant shot-reverse-shot was not so successful, as we used this technique a bit too much.
Our short film is clear, and the audience knows what happening, which made it easier to make sense of. The editing of our film went very successful, as I think it all makes sense at the end.

I learnt that, during filming sometimes it is not always important to include the whole picture but cutting and working on a certain part of the mise-en-scene works better. I think the element of suspense worked as the soundtrack, was very peculiar and unsettling.

We got positive feedback from the class and teacher. Also I think that we used the 5 second rule correctly, and took good camera shots. I think we worked well as a group and look forward to completing the real thriller.
